Description:
WeWorld-GVC has been working in Lebanon since 2006 and is now supporting vulnerable populations through emergency WASH, shelter, basic assistance and protection interventions as well as Water Governance and Local Economic Development programs aiming at increasing the resilience of the concerned communities, in the Bekaa Valley and Akkar.
Duty Station: Beirut with frequent travels to the field areas across all Lebanese regions.
Job Title: Irrigation Agronomist (Expert in Water in Agriculture (WiA) and Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA)).
Reporting to: Head of Programs
SCOPE OF THE POSITION
The selected candidate will be in charge, in the framework of the project led by Jean Paul II Foundation, for the WW-GVC component related to the definition and installation of small efficient irrigation systems in farms along the Lebanon coastline. Besides will support the WW-GVC programs in the development of technical capacities and knowledge promoting the efficient use of water and resilient agriculture. The candidate will actively contribute to the implementation of WW-GVC Lebanon’s Strategic Plan, which requires solid technical expertise to achieve the objectives related to the pillar of the livelihoods and Local Economic Development Program. Providing technical expertise in WiA and CSA activities is important to increase the farm’s productivity, enhancing at the same time the effectiveness and efficiency of the ongoing initiatives and helping to build our future portfolio.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist, in consultations with the partner JPII, in the data analysis of the baseline assessment, especially the analysis of water demand and consumption patterns among small and medium-scale farmers, identifying gaps in the current irrigation system, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement to increase agricultural productivity while decreasing water consumption.
- Identify WiA interventions and priorities to address the gaps of the selected farmers
- Prepare the BoQ, based on the need analysis and identified priorities, supporting the Log/Proc department in the preparation of the tender dossier
- Ensure the proper installation of the irrigation systems in the parcel of the selected farmers
- Identify capacity needs and gaps of farmers and small and medium agribusinesses, designing and delivering tailored training on Agricultural water system and management and CSA
- Support the head of programs in drafting proposals incorporating quality inputs related to the WiA and CSA interventions
- Support the MEAL department in data collection and compiling lessons and best practices from the ongoing activities
- Provide technical assistance and advice during the selection process and subsequent disbursement of grants to farmers, to ensure the effective implementation of water-saving technologies
- Organize and moderate, when necessary, meetings with main stakeholders
- Assist in the production and dissemination of communication material;
- Prepare and submit reports and documentation as for deadlines :
- Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to We World-GVC and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission;
- Collaborate and coordinate with other WW-GVC personnel and departments, including MEAL, finance and logistics.
- Other assigned tasks, as necessary to the projects and WW-GVC activities.
QUALIFICATION AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- A Masters in Agronomy or a related field. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agronomy, soil and water conservation or land management from a reputable university who possess experience will also be considered.
- Solid understanding of the main irrigation agricultural practices and challenges facing farmers in Lebanon.
- At least 5 years of experience in supporting the design, writing and implementation of
climate change water-focused agricultural projects in the MEA region. - Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Creativity and willingness to adjust to changes and new requirements
- Strong team spirit, together with the ability to work independently respecting deadlines
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic
- Good skills in Office tools, including formatting, layout and graphics
- A driving license is a must.
